NATIONAL SWIMRUN CHAMPIONSHIP OCTOBER 20, 2018
IGNITE SwimRun is a two-person team race. Not a relay. Teams consist of all men, all women and mixed gender. The race begins with a mass wave start. Teams complete numerous swim and run legs ending at the finish line. During the race, teammates must remain within 10 meters of each other at all times. Teammates must complete the entire course and cross the finish line together.
Each race is different. Some swim courses experience deep, open water while others are shallow and rocky. Teams navigate through each swim leg by sighting for inflatable course markers. Run courses vary between flat road and technical trail terrain. Teams navigate along each run leg as directed by course signage and ground markings.
Participants must wear shoes during all run legs. Rules permit swim aids such as hand paddles, pull buoys, and even a specific type of swimrun wetsuit. Safety gear is required by race rules but ultimately athletes must finish with the gear they start with.
There aren’t many cities, none in fact, where you can kayak and raft class III and IV rapids in an urban setting. Richmond is the only place in the country where you can run the rapids, pull out and walk to a downtown brewery, bar or restaurant. The James River in Richmond VA is so much more than a place to shoot rapids. Belle Isle is a gathering place with rocks perfect for picnicking, and refreshing waters for wading and swimming. The James River Park system features single track trails, the North Bank and Buttermilk (a Best Urban Trail), that are perfect for hiking, running and mountain biking.
